What are grants?
A grant is money awarded to a business by a government body, council or foundation to help it do something specific, such as hire staff, invest in equipment, research a new product or expand into new markets. Unlike a loan, a grant does not normally need to be repaid, as long as you spend it on what the funder agreed to.
Do I have to pay a grant back?
Generally no. Grants are awarded for a defined purpose and you keep the money provided you meet the funder's conditions. Some schemes ask you to contribute part of the project cost yourself, which is called match funding.
